Here’s a brief look back in time on this day, February 8th.
In 1587, Mary, Queen of Scots was executed at Fotheringhay Castle for her role in the Babington Plot: an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1904, a surprise attack on Russia brought by the Empire of Japan was executed at Port Arthur, Manchuria, inciting the Russo-Japanese War shortly afterwards. The conflict would continue into late 1905 as they battle over land rights to Korea and Manchuria. It wasn’t until August when 35th U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt mediates a peace treaty between the two rivals in Portsmouth, NH. He would be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
In 1960, construction on the Hollywood Walk of Fame begins following years of planning. The first individual to have their star laid would be director and producer Stanley Kramer on November 23rd of that same year. Today, around 2800 stars dazzle Hollywood Boulevard.
