This Day in History: February 6th

Here’s a brief look back in time on this day, February 6th.

In 1937, notable writer and novelist John Steinbeck would grace future high school English classrooms with the classic tale of two migrant workers toiling to achieve the American Dream: Of Mice and Men.

In 1952, George VI passes away in his sleep following a long illness. His oldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, would succeed the throne four months later at the age of 25.

In 1985, 40th U.S. president Ronald Reagan announces the colloquially termed “Reagan Doctrine” during his State of the Union address. The speech on foreign policy served as an ideological call-to-action against alleged communist aggression by pledging financial and military support to “freedom fighters” in different countries. This would serve as a prelude to the uncovering of the Iran-Contra affair in 1986.
